It has been a great start to our new year! I am excited to share with you what we have been doing.
Kindergarten: We started our year learning these new songs: The Fingerband, Where's Fat Piggy, Jack in the Box. We also read the book Piggies by Don Wood. We are beginning a unit on the farm and learning which sounds they make as well as shapes that go with the each animal stall in the barn. We were also introduced to a xylophone and the beautiful sound that it makes. We will continue with our farm unit and work on singing voices as well as begin a unit on moving slow, medium and fast to match the music of the piano. First Grade: We started our year by reading the book Old Black Fly by Jim Aylesworth. We had to be detectives while listening to the book to discover some "mysteries" inside our book. The second time we read the book, we added the sign language alphabet and helped sing the chorus of the song. We have also been reviewing our favorite game from Kindergarten, the Red Light, Green Light. This game teaches the kids to move the way the music sounds. Moving slow, medium and fast as well as identifying different styles of music such as marching, tip toe, and sneaking. Second Grade: We started our year reviewing our first grade Rhythm Reading Cards and started learning our new notes and rests found on the second grade Rhythm Reading Cards. We worked on a new song, No One in the House and added body percussion to match the words. The second time we came to music, we reviewed our new song and added different rhythm instruments. We rotated through all of the instrument so we each got a turn to play all of them. Third Grade: We started our year reviewing our second grade Rhythm Reading Cards and started working on our third grade cards. We quickly discovered that they are much harder and longer patterns with several new notes and rests to learn! We learned a new song, Tideo and added body percussion to match the words. The second time we came to music, we reviewed our song and added different rhythm instruments. We rotated through the different instrument groups. Fourth Grade: We started our year reviewing our third grade Rhythm Reading Cards and started working on our third grade cards. Several new notes and rests to learn this year! We learned the song Listen, which talks about different instruments, what they look like as well as characteristic of how they sound. Our next music class we will have an opportunity to play these instruments! Don't forget to order your recorder!! Fifth Grade: We started our year reviewing our fourth grade Rhythm Reading Cards and started working on our fourth grade cards. We listened to the song Pink Panther and tried to figure out how many sections of music were in it. Next we added body percussion to each section making different patterns. We talked about our new vocabulary word: FORM and how composers use FORM to help them create music.
